Why Timothée Chalamet Skipped the 2023 Met Gala

Every year, the stars align for the annual Met Gala. Bedazzled and bespoke, celebrities don designer outfits and have a big, grand ball at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year, they dressed in tribute to legendary German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. Some people covered themselves in jewels, and some dressed as giant cats.

But not everyone could attend the event this year, notably including one Timothée Chalamet. The actor missed out on last year’s event as well, though he attended in 2021 wearing an all-white ensemble designed by Haider Ackermann—one which boasted a satin tuxedo and Converse sneakers. The Wonka star also served as co-chair. Sadly, this time around, Chalamet was most likely too busy touring the globe to promote his upcoming sequel to Dune. The actor hasn’t offered an official reason for skipping the event, but his Dune 2 co-star, Zendaya, also did not attend. Their last public appearance was at CinemaCon in Las Vegas just last month, where they promoted the sci-fi fantasy sequel. Those who did attend the event were offered a look at the upcoming Met exhibit celebrating Karl Lagerfeld’s work, titled, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” The exhibit reportedly houses around 150 of Lagerfeld’s pieces, alongside many of his sketches and designs.

According to Variety, Chalamet had to swim in melted chocolate on the set of Wonka—and even got a stomach ache from eating too much candy. I’m sure having to look at Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa wasn’t easy on the tummy, either. If there was any outfit ready for the Met Gala, however, it would be the velvet Wonka jacket: massive top hat, bowtie, and cane. I’m just saying! Maybe next year.
