Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by DaCosta, Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells, The Marvels follows Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) as they team up after learning that every time they each use their powers they literally swap places.
Now, it’s up to this unlikely trio to come together to figure out why this is happening, and hopefully put an end to it.
Before we get into even more details about the movie, the cast, and everything in between, below is the first teaser trailer:
Not to be dramatic, but this already looks so good! Brie, Teyonah, and Iman already make such an iconic duo, and it feels like the type of Marvel movie I’ve honestly been craving lately.
As mentioned above, The Marvels was directed by Nia DaCosta, who is best known for her work on Little Woods and the new Candyman. She is the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios movie.
From the trailer alone, you can see that The Marvels picks up after the events of WandaVision and right after the events of Ms. Marvel.
If you need a refresher, WandaVision ended with Monica getting called to space, and it looks like when we see her in The Marvels, she’s established herself as an important member of this space community.
This is also the first time Monica and Carol have interacted since the events of Captain Marvel, when Monica was still a child, and since Maria Rambeau’s (Lashana Lynch) death. And if WandaVision is any indication, Monica holds some resentment towards Carol.
And then, Ms. Marvel ended with Kamala in her room and then suddenly she’s gone and Carol/Captain Marvel is there in her place — we literally see this moment play out once again in the trailer.
The Marvels trailer also gives us a first look at Zawe Ashton, who has been cast as the villain, but that’s all we know so far. Zawe has appeared in TV shows and movies like Mr. Malcolm’s List, Nocturnal Animals, Fresh Meat, Case Histories, The Handmaid’s Tale, and more.
And, we also see Park Seo-joon, whose role has been kept under wraps. He is known for his roles in South Korean movies and films like Fight for My Way, Midnight Runners, The Divine Fury, and he even had a small appearance in Parasite.
Also, Goose, my favorite Flerken, returns, which feels important to point out — but also we see numerous other cats at one point so I hope Goose made some Flerken friends.
On top of all of this, the trailer gives us a first look at Monica’s new superhero look, which resembles Monica’s Photon costume from the Marvel comics.
Anyway, I am simply so excited for The Marvels. From this trailer alone, it looks like a return to some of the classic Marvel Studios movies I’ve loved in the past, and I can’t wait to see Nia DaCosta’s work alongside this cast.
The Marvels hits theaters November 2023.
